Benjamin kneels by a filthy puddle; Lisa sits beside him. Lisa tells Benjamin not to drink the filthy water. Benjamin claims he must drink to keep going. Lisa argues that he will get typus and die; they are close, he can hold off. Benjamin argues that he won't mind dying AFTER crossing the border and saving his manuscript from the Gestapo.
